Eohippus was a browsing animal that lived on soft leaves. it was well equipped to survive in jungle-type conditions, being camouflaged by a patterned coat, and its toed feet allowed easy movement over wet ground.

By the Oligocene period, 25-40 million years ago, Eohippus had been superseded by the three-toed Mesohippus, which had longer legs and much improved dentition, allowing for the consumption of a wider range of plant growth.
